This building, owned by C.A.I. of Sappada, is dedicated to the memory of a heroic patriot from Sappada, Pier Fortunato Calvi. It is the highest shelter in the region and is located in a fantastic position:to the east it is enclosed by the splendid amphitheatres of the Chiadenis and the Pic, to the north by the impressive mass of the Peralba, and in the other direction it overlooks, like an eagle’s nest, the rocky coast running from Lastoni to the distant Rinaldo group.
This is perhaps the most satisfying of the classic walks due to the majestic setting in which it is conducted. Trippers enjoy the feeling of being at altitude, aware of the embrace of the crags around them. The route is simple, moderately strenuous but only in the medium-high part, bathed in sunshine, and quite popular.
Best time of year
From Cima Sappada, take the Val Sesis road to the fork for the Calvi shelter (8 km, ample car park). Here, take the white cart track that, in long, regular bends, runs up the slope almost to the abandoned marble quarry. From here, an alternative route to the destination begins, the so-called “lazybones trail”, a more direct track but decidedly more strenuous and difficult in that it climbs the grassy, stony slope in tight zigzags. So it is better to continue along the wide cart track, which is only steep for a stretch of around fifty metres. There’s a short ledge to catch the breath, a few more easy bends and then the shelter.
The descent can follow the same route or along the "lazybones trail".
