A very broad, idyllic grassy saddle lying between the mountain range of the same name and that of the Clap, which puts the valley of Sappada in rapid communication with that of the val Pesarina. Surrounded by the southern rock-faces of the Siera Spitz and the Piccolo Siera on one hand and the bold yellow ones of the Creton dell'Arco and the Vette Nere on the other.

This is another classical excursion in the area. Short, rewarding, sunny, varied, it leads the hiker in a bucolic setting, where the silence is broken only by the sound of the cowbells of grazing cattle. Along the path there are beautiful views of the valley of Sappada, the mountains that encircle it to the north and the distant, impressive Popèra group to the west. Although the shortness of the route permits a return in time for lunch, we should not be in a hurry and even a simple sandwich eaten up there in the sun, bathed in the deep quiet of the grasslands, has a unique taste!

Turn-by-turn directions

From the middle of Sappada and the Bach district the walker descends to the Piave, crossing it on a boardwalk (signed), not far from the Mondschein restaurant/baita, taking a wide forest track that proceeds into the woods alternating steep stretches with long sections that are almost level (along one of these at a height of 1342 m. crossing the track from Cima Sappada), to the rocky buttresses at the of base of the Siera Spitz. The path to this point becomes exposed but is wide and has fixed equipment, taking us into the woods once again with some hairpins following the deep ravine bordered on the left westernmost shoulder of the Siera and on the right by the craggy wall of the Col dei Mughi, where you should stop for a moment to admire the Siera river and its deep green pools hundreds of metres below. A few steep turns lead to a short exposed passage that is unequipped, before a long traverse leads to level ground, followed by a short descent to the junction (1518 m) for the dell’Arco pass and the Damiana bivouac (tables). After some ups and downs we encounter the gravels from which the first waters of the river Siera bubble up just before the broad green saddle that is our destination.

It is recommended to stop at the meadows below the Casera Siera, without reaching the pass itself, which is located in a rather unhappy position about a hundred metres further on.
