Map / 09 CADIN DELLE VETTE NERE - Sappada

This is a basin (“catino” = “cadin”) of rocks and debris enclosed by the Vette Nere to the east and the Creton dell'Arco to the west. To the south in its upper part a high altitude and narrow slot, the so-called Forca Alta di Culzei, brings it into contact with the val Pesarina (using the via ferrata dei 50)

This varied itinerary, sunny and not particularly strenuous, leads to one of the most secluded and unjustifiably less visited mountains of Sappada. The goal is really unusual, some small patches of grassland, debris and Cyclopean (Mycenean)-style squared-off blocks in the middle and upper sections of the route and all surrounded by amazing rock structures, especially to the west, where the yellow, overhanging walls are reminiscent of the most famous peaks of the Dolomites. Up here, peace and uncontaminated nature reign. Once you leave the path n. 317 that goes to the dell’Arco pass, there is no longer any marked trail and a certain sense of direction is required. On the return, especially when visibility is poor, the walker need to be extremely careful in identifying the exit point from the Cadin (keeping an isolated larch as a reference point).

Turn-by-turn directions

From Sappada with itinerary n.7 rapidly leads to the dell’Arco pass. Thirty metres or so before the fourth-from-last bend, leave the easy path (with an arrow and the words “Cadin Vette Nere”) and descend to the left along a highly uncertain track towards the bed of a stream that is almost always dry, cross it while aiming at an evident grassy and debris-strewn ridge with sparse mugo pines located to the south-east and below the rocks of the northern shoulder of the Creton dell'Arco. Climb using no obligatory route until you have worked your way around it within view of an isolated larch before continuing on downhill southwards on uncertain tracks towards the heart of Cadin where some gigantic squared-off boulders 10 to 15 metres in height dominate and that are even visible from Sappada. The walker has now reached their goal and the only problem is to choose the most comfortable spot for a well-deserved break.

For those who will still have some ‘puff’ left and want to see some other views we can recommended the following charming variant. From the highest part of Cadin point southwards towards a clear and steep debris gully at the top of which opens a small saddle on the crest. This is Forca Alta di Culzei from which the view extends to the Siera group and to the Creta Forata, the val Pesarina and beyond. Through the Forca passes the Via Ferrata dei 50 (see the section on the Vie Ferrate).

Return

If the return to Sappada, instead of by the ascent route, is followed via Cadin di Fuori (itinerary n. 8) then add half an hour more to the time required.

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike
