The saddle located between the rocks at the base of Creta Cacciatori to the east and a small area of grassy and rocky high ground to the west, the so-called Creta di Casera Vecchia (2285 m), which in turn defines another large grassy saddle, the false passo dei Cacciatori pass, beyond which rise the steep south-eastern rock faces of monte Chiadènis.
An interesting suggestion for those who want to reach the Calvi refuge, albeit with a much longer path, avoiding the always crowded track that leads from the car park at the fork at 1815 m on the provincial road 22 of the val Sesis. The route is varied, sunny, panoramic, only tiring over the final stretch and winds through meadows, woods, scree and gullies, with views across the mountains of Volaia, the distant Coglians group and the Cimon.
Follow itinerary n. 23B (in the Walking section) to the sharp 90° turn, shortly after which a sign on the right indicating “passo Cacciatori - monte Avanza” invites the walker to take a path that heads east through thick woodland with short ups and downs until it arrives at a debris gully furrowed by the waters of a river. Having crossed it, continue, first on the level and then climbing beneath the steep wall of the Creta di Casera Vecchia already in sight of the large gully southwest of monte Avanza. After crossing the path that climbs from dairy farm at Casa Vecchia at 1810 m a.s.l we proceed in the aforementioned canyon, reaching a crossroads beneath the fourth pinnacle of the Genziane (here there are currently no adequate signposts because the extremely useful signs from the past have lain scattered on the ground for years). At this point, disregarding the track to the right continue into the valley to the summit of monte Avanza, taking the first left that rises to northwards before cross diagonally westwards to the wall of the fourth pinnacle (campanile = bell-tower) before entering and climbing the quite exposed and steep scree-filled gully with a number of regular bends carved into the rock. The climb is entirely across unstable ground until you come out onto the pass. Shortly before, about three-quarters of the way up, at a sort of small shelf, another gully opens on the right featuring a broad scree slope that leads to the forcella delle Genziane (see itinerary n. 36).
The return can be done using the same route, but we recommend continuing on from the pass along the path that climbs northwards to the Sesis pass (signed) and from there down to the Calvi refuge and the large car park on the provincial road n. 22. Following the latter for c. 500 metres you will return to the start point at the junction of the Casa Vecchia dairy farm and you will have completed the Chiadènis ring.
